Ruby-throated Hummingbird Archilochus colubris
Benjamin Park Trail, Waterloo, ON
3 June 2013
This male Ruby-throated Hummingbird was seen at the top of an exposed tree with unimpeded vision all around. It was there both on the outgoing part of our walk and on the way back, so we suspect that this is the "guard post" for this male's territory. The temperature was barely 12°C, having dipped to around 4°C overnight. Torpor must be a semi-permanent state for this tiny bird!
