American Herring Gull

American Herring Gull Larus smithsonianus
Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, ON
4 June 2013

Ring-billed Gull Larus delawarensis is far and away the most common species of gull in this area at this time of year, so we were surprised to discover four American Herring Gull L. smithsonianus in a temporary pond created by recent heavy rains, in a farmer's field with an emergent crop. In general they tend to frequent larger bodies of water.
