I know that many of you look forward to regular updates on our darling Lily, so here are a few shots from our latest walk.
At least until mom tried to put on her sunglasses. However, once they were in place she seemed to forget they were even there.
She was happy to be out in bright sunshine, alert to everything going on around her. Having developed a special affection for dogs she follows each one and chats to them excitedly!
We always take a picture of Heather and Lily as they are about to leave. Two beautiful young ladies if ever there were!
It is always cause for elation and excitement to have a new bird visit the yard, so we were delighted to have an Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) pay us a very brief visit. Despite searching frequently since, it has not been seen again.
Miriam did manage to get one reasonable picture through the bedroom window. It does not show the whole unobstructed bird unfortunately, but it was the best we could do.
Last Sunday we had our first COVID-19 vaccination and on the way to the clinic we stopped at a storm water management pond where a pair of Hooded Mergansers (Lophodytes cucullatus) were keeping company.
It is such a handsome little duck. The hairdo on the female would rival Lily's earlier unruly coiffure!
The picture is lacking to say the least, but I don't even have another picture on file, so I present you with our only image of this species. To her credit Miriam followed this insect around for several minutes but it would touch down for only the briefest of moments. She did well to capture what she did.
Three male Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) have returned to SpruceHaven, right on schedule, but in terms of posing for pictures they were barely more acquiescent than the butterfly.
On the way home we spotted an unusually pale Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis). Finally a willing accomplice in having a picture taken!
It was very muddy along the Benjamin Park Trail when we went for a walk, not unexpected of course given the warm temperatures of late and the rapid snowmelt.
An Eastern Comma (Polygonia comma) fluttered and teased us, but finally landed and we were able to capture an image for posterity.
Mourning Cloaks (Nymphalis antiopia), always one of the earliest butterflies of the spring, were seen several times, but declined to tarry a while, and went on their way.
The following picture was taken on the same trail in a previous year, so it is authentic and shows this handsome species well.
The title of this post is priceless... :)
ReplyDeleteLily is indeed a beautiful and happy child.
I don't see those gorgeous birds here so I pay attention when I read your posts.
Thank you and Miriam for all the beauties on display. I am thrilled you have had your shot too - is this the first or the second?
ReplyDeleteOur first, Sue. We received the Moderna vaccine, but the second shot will only be administered in four months. The medical authorities claim that it will still be effective after that time lag - and I have no choice but to take their word for it!
DeleteThis seems so strange to me. Here, the time between Pfizer vaccines is three weeks, and between Moderna doses, four weeks. I was distressed to read this: "A national panel of vaccine experts in Canada recommended Wednesday that provinces extend the interval between the two doses of a COVID-19 shot to four months to quickly inoculate more people amid a shortage of doses in Canada." I wish you could transport yourself here! Effective tomorrow, anyone in Texas over the age of sixteen can be immunized, and the vaccine supplies are more than adequate. Over 50% of people over sixteen in my county already have been immunized -- I hope things will speed up for you!
DeleteLilly is a sweet baby, love the pics with the sunglasses :)
ReplyDeleteI don't often see colourful butterflies, these are pretty! Have a lovely weekend David
Hello David,
ReplyDeleteIt must be wonderful to welcome the first butterfly´s. The hawk is beautiful to see!
Have a wonderful day
Marijke
David - of course, Lily steals the show! Nothing else could quite bring the same sort of light - spring is a while off for us here, so I am glad to see your signs of the new season!
ReplyDeleteThese are great shots! I'm afraid Lily steals the show in those glasses!
Bon dimanche
It's so lovely to see spring arrives in your country, David. Lily is sweet as always.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful birds and butterflies, but they pale in comparison to beautiful Lily. Love those teeth! So good to see her again! And good that Miriam got some butterfly shots, they are often very uncooperative! Have a wonderful Sunday, and thanks for sharing, especially beautiful Lily! Hugs to you both, Valerie
ReplyDeleteAlways, ALWAYS enjoy seeing your darling, Lily!! And, of course, the beautiful birds!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for joining us and sharing your link with us birders at IRBB this weekend!
~Anni, host of I'd Rather B Birdin'
hello David
ReplyDeletewith the sunglasses she looks like a little popstar .. nice day with nice pictures
Greetings Frank
There's much of note in this post, but the buds stood out. spring in Southwestern Ontario is certainly ahead of Eastern Ontario.
ReplyDeleteWe are usually at least a couple of weeks ahead of my daughter in Ottawa.
DeleteButterflies can be infuriating when the do not touch down for more than a couple of seconds, and then they fly over the hedge where you cannot see them!! Lovely set of photos. Hope all is well Diane
ReplyDeleteHello David,
ReplyDeleteLily is adorable, cute photos. Beautiful collection of birds, I love the Towhee and the Bluebird. The Hooded Mergansers are a favorite too. The butterflies are beautiful captures. Great outing and photos. Take care, wishing you a great new week!
Butterflies feel the warm weather, and buds enjoy it.
Besos.
ReplyDeleteHi David.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful the Birds and Ducks and Butterflies.
Lovely to see Lily, it makes me happy when I see her again in the pictures.
Wonderfully innocent and ignorant of what is going on outside around her.
Greetings from Patricia.
She has a few years yet before she is troubled by the state of the world, Patricia. And that's a good thing.
DeleteOhh David Thanx for showing Lilly!I think she is looking more and more like her beautiful mother now!So nice to see this beautiful new life growing up in good hands :))
ReplyDeleteLove your hike in that Benjamin route,,It is so like here at my place. We dont have sunshine now.We have storm and winther a little back again ,so we stay at home knitting and reading books til it passes.Great new header again. You have such a good interest in birds David!Nice reading!wish you a nice Easter Eve!Greetings Anita ps sorry my broken english!
Your English is perfectly fine, Anita, and a whole lot better than my non-existent Norwegian.

ReplyDeleteCrikey - we're a long way off butterflies round here - and I have been anxiously awaiting the tree buds, but nothing. Even the daffies are tardy this year. Hey ho - like you, thank goodness for archival images!!! The towhee is a handsome bird and I love the mergansers! YAM xx
Hi David - so wonderful to see Heather and Lily - she's turning to a delightful lively little soul - you'll have much pleasure with her as she grows. Love the photos - thank you and the descriptions - the Eastern Towhee is very special - thanks Miriam ... we can see a fair amount of him. Yes the female duck's hair could have been Lily's ...
ReplyDeleteGlad you both had your first vaccine - I had my first about six weeks ago - 2nd one is on May 1st ... at least we're partly protected ... it'll be easier with the warmer and longer daylight days - and enjoy watching Spring burgeon ... cheers - Hilary
Hi David, beautiful photos of Heather and Lily. They are very beautiful. Is Heather your daughter ? I love the Hooded Mergansers, I never saw them. Have a nice day. Greetings Caroline
ReplyDeleteHeather is not my daughter, Caroline, but she is very special to me. She is a biologist who came out to SpruceHaven to help us with bird banding. We have remained in touch ever since.
DeleteLily looks very happy, as always. Great assortment of photos. Isn't it a little early for butterflies? (I don't know much about them, other than they are beautiful and I usually don't see them / notice them until the warmer months of Summer.) I hope your vaccine choice wasn't the AstraZeneca one. I don't care what the EU and US Governments are claiming about it, because the Pharmaceutical companies are big business (too big to fail) and big donors to politicians, so of course the governments are saying it doesn't cause blood clots. Sure (sarcasm). I think the US Government had some AstraZeneca, but they sent it to Mexico and Canada? If it's so great, why didn't they keep it and give it to US citizens? I'm not an anti-vaxxer, but I haven't forgotten that prior to the US presidential election, politicians like Nancy Pelosi said she didn't trust the vaccines because they were rushed through by the Trump administration. Then Biden gets elected, and her lines change 180 degrees, to it's 100% safe. (And I'm not / never was a Trump supporter.)
ReplyDeleteSome butterflies overwinter, often in the larval stage, emerging in very early spring. The three species covered here are right on schedule.
DeleteWow … the Eastern Comma is a beauty, indeed, always transforming like Lily! :)
ReplyDeleteLily in those sunglasses - oh my! Love the butterfly pictures.
ReplyDeleteYour Spring appears to have arrived earlier this year, which is good, we need all of the vitamin D sunshine that we can get this year.
ReplyDeleteLily is revelling in the sun, and perhaps by the summertime she will be out of her pushchair crawling or toddling around - then you will all have your hands full.
The rare garden visitors, the pair of Hooded Mergansers, are an interesting colour, especially those fine blue beaks.
You are right, Rosemary. She already crawls at high speed and pulls herself to a standing position holding onto a chair - or the dog! It won't be long before she is walking outside with us.
DeleteOmg she is so cute!!! 😍

ReplyDeleteBuen domingo David. Y a seguir con cuidado.
Un abrazo.
I still call them Rufus sided Tohees...and am happy whenever I happen upon one scratching along the ground under bushes. Love Lily and the other spring beauties!
ReplyDeleteRufous-sided was a far more descriptive name wasn't it?
DeleteSo lovely photos :)
ReplyDeleteI love the sunglasses on Lily!
ReplyDeleteLovely captures and the best one of all is Lily with the sunglasses. :)
ReplyDeleteLoved it all, Lily especially, the Hooded Mergansers with fancy hairdos, and the dangerous Red Tailed Hawk plus the butterflies...oh yes and Heather too:-)
ReplyDeleteWe are weeks from butterflies yet.
ReplyDeleteLily is adorable in her shades.
Love the ducks especially!
Delighted to hear of your Eastern Towhee, David, and not too shabby a shot at all on Miriam's part. Those Hooded Mergansers always get me wistfully thinking - and they do show up in UK occasionally, but I have never seen one.
ReplyDeleteI'm very impressed by your butterflies. Mourning Cloak has always been a favourite, and I have seen them in mainland Europe. I'm wondering if your Polygona comma is like our Polygona c-album and overwinters as an adult (usually hibernating in out-buildings or houses) - in which case, the wing damage could be an old battle scar.
They do overwinter as adults, Richard, and as you correctly point out the wing damage could be a wound from the previous season.
DeleteHello Both,
ReplyDeleteYour Spring appears to have arrived early, Lily looks as snug as normal, and how about the sun glasses, I'm sure it will be a pair of bins next. Super images Miriam, the Hooded Mergansers are superb, as for Butterflies, with our weather at the moment we are weeks away from seeing any. Good you have had the Vaccine,
You stay safe and well
John
ReplyDeleteSeeing Lily's smile makes a person's day. :)
ReplyDeleteIs the damage to the butterfly's wing probably due to emerging from the cocoon, bumping into something, or from a predator.
ReplyDeleteAlmost certainly from a would-be predator, Joanne.
ReplyDeleteDear Miriam, Heather & David, how are you beautiful people!
ReplyDeletei see that very well, enjoying the spring sun and the new buds and
the most beautiful star of the forest, of SpruceHaven and
of all Canada and the planet: Lily!!! beautiful creature
so rosy and those two teeth fill
my heart with love. She is the most beautiful flower
and shines like the sun... but what do i say ?! not even
the sun is brighter than lily.
Many kisses and hugs towards Ontario from the great
argentine poet jajaja XD lol
Have a great week ahead! ° ❀ • °: 🎀: ° • ❀ °

I loved seeing the pussy willows. They always were one of our first signs of spring -- just wonderful for snowbound midwesterners. I love Lily in her sunglasses. She looks for all the world like a Hollywood starlet, although I suspect her personality is more pleasing than many of the starlets'. I suppose today they'd be called 'influencers'!
ReplyDeleteWhat a rewarding trek you had!
ReplyDeleteWe're nowhere near a vaccine yet. I am hoping...
A wonderful post, David, heralding Spring! We are seeing similar activity here as insects are beginning to buzz, spring migration is waning, resident birds are nest-building and flora is about to burst into a riot of color!
ReplyDeleteA great time to be outside.
What a nice surprise you had outside the bedroom window! A Peeping Towhee!
Gini and I also received our fist vaccinations last week. Fingers crossed that "normal" will someday return.
Lovely David, i'm still waiting to see my first Butterfly! It's so nice to see all the signs of spring. I'm glad you've been able to have your first vaccine.
ReplyDeletePrecious photos of dear Lily, she is so good with the sunglasses. A joy to see the butterflies and learn a little more. You are an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteYou both did well to get photos of those camera-shy critters. Love that first photo of Lily - she looks, as we used to say, as snug as a bug in a rug :)
ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeletenice to see that spring has found its way over to you. You even managed a photo of a butterfly already. And Lily looks like a real model with her sunglasses at picture 3.
Best regards, Corrie
Beautiful sights, one and all. Love the pussy willows, butterfly and of course all the birds. But the star of the show is Lily. They will So appreciate those shots as she gets older!
ReplyDeleteLily is a sweetie! Wonderful shots.
ReplyDeleteA joy to visit, as always. Spring's arrival and Lily's smile!
ReplyDeleteOh, Lily will be holding your hand and laughing as you walk on the Benjamin Park Trail. Oh the adventures you two will have.
ReplyDeletePleased you were able to have your first vaccination.
ReplyDeleteAll beautiful photographs.
Lily is just the sweetest little girl, she makes me smile :)
All the best Jan
So beautiful, sweet and cute baby Lily..
ReplyDeleteYour all pictures are awesome..I like the beautiful birds and butterfly..
Great shot..
Thanks for sharing
Have a nice week
Regards
Lily does seem a happy baby. You're lucky to be able to share her progress as she grows..
ReplyDeleteglad you have so much beautiful things around you :)
ReplyDeleteLoved to see the Hooded Mergansers and butterflies. You are way ahead of os when it coems to spring.
Enjoy it!
Happy to see the bright colored spring creatures are returning to Canada, including Miss Lily and her new teeth, butterflies, and a new yard bird. I predict some green will be following soon!
ReplyDeleteLily grows so fast David, it seems she is always happy, does not cry. What the teeth!
ReplyDeleteFirst butterfly looks nice and they said the summer will be warm.
What a precious baby.
ReplyDeleteSaludos
As always, it's a pleasure to visit. Lily's smile and your beautiful photos of spring.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday, David!
A lot of beauties in this post, David, starting with the lovely Miss Lily and her mom, heather, and ending with beautiful flutterbys.
ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteSpring shows itself already in different ways. Flowers everywhere, blossoming trees, over-active birds and luckily also our summer visitors are coming back to their summerresorts. Soon we will see birds on their nests and after a while their off-spring as well. A favourite season for many people.
Greetings, Kees
Lovely birds and butterflies, but the most beautiful stars are really Heather and little princess Lily.
ReplyDeleteGreetings
Lili and her mother are two beautiful ladies.
ReplyDeleteHugs and greetings.
Hi friend David,
ReplyDeleteit is also nice to see the little ones grow up and you have to enjoy that to the fullest 💓 Then you switch back to the birds and I see beautiful specimens again, including the red-tailed hawk. The pictures of the butterflies are great. The color of the orange butterfly splashes off my screen hahahahaha ... Beautiful and also wonderful to see. It also reflects spring ;-)
Dear greetings and a kiss from me,
Helma
