I have just returned from my fifth trip to Cuba, leading a group of keen birders to experience not only the natural history of Cuba, but its culture and its wonderful people.
Some of them have become family to me, in every sense but shared biology. They are dear and precious and always in my heart.
Here is my sensational Cuban guide, Tania Piñeiro Cordero, with her two daughters, Mariana on the left, Rocío, on the right. What a fine job Tania has done in raising two exceptional young women, who doubtless will make their mark in the world.
And it all began with two incredible grandmothers, stalwarts both, an example to the world. They have tackled difficulties and adversity that would cow most of us, but they have faced life with strength, courage, and most of all with fierce dedication to their families.
...I expected you to make your Cuban trip later.

Je reconnais Mariana 😉.
ReplyDeleteBisous
I've been to Cuba only once, and enjoyed our time off the resort. The poverty that most people experience is sad to see, but almost everyone we met had a perpetual smile and a great attitude.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you had a wonderful time, and I'm looking forward to seeing the nature photographs I'm sure you'll share!
How wonderful! Kudos to the 3 generations of strong and determined women :-)

DeleteHow wonderful for you to visit Cuba for the fith time. Such beautiful people.
ReplyDeleteHi David - I couldn't agree more with your post than you've shown and explained to us ... wonderful to have such caring women ready to share their world with you. Bet it was a wonderful trip - looking forward to hearing about it. I've just ordered the Africa book you reviewed for us ... thank you - awaiting happily its arrival. Freezing here with freezing fog - unusual ... we did have some sun by the coast earlier in the day - life toddles on ... and I'm inside and warm - I'm pleased to say - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteHmmm. I'm wondering - idly - whether in a long life devoted mainly to word churning I've ever used the word stalwart.
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful indeed...the smiles light up their faces! I'm glad you had a good trip!
ReplyDeleteQuerido amigo son sonrisa lo dice todo, me alegra de que estéis acompañados de personas tan maravillosas como vosotros. Un fuerte abrazo para todos.

ReplyDeleteI may be a little tardy, Erika. The next week and a half looks pretty busy!

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful tribute to your Cuban guide!
Sorry no comment on this yesterday when I read it. for some reason I could not find the comment box. I was going to check on my desk top later and totally forgot. sometimes the screen on my chromebook is weird. The photos of your adopted family are so full of joy and they are all beautiful, and oh so happy.. having the same friends each time you visit Cuba is just great. looking forward to the photos you took.
ReplyDeleteAnd I will be seeing them again in February.
DeleteBack from a remarkable trip to Cuba. Needless to say that it was one of those once in a lifetime trips. Tania and Cordero family were excellent host and of course above par guide. Thank you David for including this emerging early birder in the process.
ReplyDeleteThanks for these kind words, Karl. It was a great pleasure to have you on the trip.
Deletelas bellas mujeres!
