After a snowy overnight, with everywhere white and glistening, it was a perfect day for an outing with our little Princess Sasha.
Her parents, Shishir and Megha, deserve a great deal of credit for bringing out their daughter to enjoy winter, and have some intimate contact with wildlife.
On the way to the car there is a large rock where people often leave seeds. An American Tree Sparrow (Spizelloides arborea) was taking advantage of the buffet.
Several Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) both male and female decorated the trees.
Sasha was anxious to feed some Black-capped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) so we moved along the trail.
Sasha and I were ahead of her mom and dad and we looked back to make sure they were following along.
Cardinals seemed exceptionally abundant and were not reluctant to feed close at hand along the rail.
White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) is an exceptionally handsome sparrow and we were captivated by a couple of them, often feeding with other species.
Perhaps a class of young grade schoolers had a bird house building project and attached them here and there. Certainly, they were more bright than functional.
The only ducks on the river were Mallards (Anas platyrynchos) and Sasha could not resist trying to feed them too.
The ducks swan right up to her hand but were not quite brave enough to take the food. With more time to invest it could be done, I am sure.
Dusk was starting to close in and it was time to make our way back to the car. Having fed the chickadees from her hand many times, we placed a little seed on her hat, and without a moment's delay, the birds were feeding merrily.
And nor will we!

Absolutely wonderful winter photos. Have you tried rolling around in the snow yourself? It's worth trying sometime. I like it myself. I get out of the sauna and roll around in the snow, then go back to the sauna to warm up.

DeleteSasha está feliz, ¡qué bien! Me recordó a mi niñez.
A lot of snow. Beautiful photos.

I'm envious of such a walk on snow, I didn't yet have it this year! The photographs of the northern cardinals are absolute brilliance. Especially in the cold wintery environment, they seem so exotic.
ReplyDelete...a wonderful walk in nature with two cuties!
ReplyDeletetalk about precious memories, these will be with Sasha and her family forever, and I am sure with you and your wife too. love those gigantic earmuffs. I would not enjoy rolling in the snow, but I sure would love to feed those birds from hand or head... her mother is beautiful, in fact they both are.. what a fun post and my favorite bird pic today is the female cardinal. she is gorgeous
ReplyDeleteI wish there was snow here too! There was but only a little and I like a lot of snow.
ReplyDeleteNow the birds in the pictures are especially beautiful. I can't choose from all of them to write to you which one is my favorite.
Sasha looks happy in the pictures and it's obvious that she enjoyed the walk. Éva

It's great that you have snow.
Here we're heading for high temperatures for the winter. Next week it could reach 14 degrees Celsius, which is 57.20 in Fahrenheit.

Sweet Sasha, how lovely that she experienced feeding the chickadees.
All the best Jan
Sasha is adorable, and I love the photo with the chickadee on her hat. That alone looks like a joyful moment. I think I need to go out (next time I'm actually dressed for snow) and make a snow angel. I'm inspired after seeing Sasha enjoying the snow. It looks like you had a fantastic time out, and this is certainly a charming happy post. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. hugs-Erika

ReplyDeleteSasha is indeed cute.
ReplyDeleteLovely post David. Great to have photos of family enjoying themselves.
ReplyDeleteNice photos and the Northern Cardinal is such a beautiful bird, both male and female.
Hi David,
ReplyDeleteIt's always wonderful to see children and younger people getting excited about nature. Feeding the birds will definitely be an experience she'll tell her friends about. It reminds me a bit of the little lily you posted about several times before.
Cheers, Frank
What a lovely excursion! I’m sure Sasha enjoyed it very much. The cardinals are amazing! If I ever go to North America, it is my n 1 bird on my birds-to-see list! Thank you very much for sharing, Dave. Take care!
ReplyDeleteOh to have an experience like that being out & about with Sasha, it must bring a different kind of joy to you and her parents! She will have sweet dreams of Chickadees dancing on her head!
ReplyDeleteHi David.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful series.
Beautiful photos.
And so lovely with the snow.
Greetings from Patricia.
Hello David, what beauty this winter wonderland. Snow love it. Here we still have gray skies and rain. But who knows! Sasha what a beauty as well. Great fun feeding the birds. I lik the Carinals and the White troat sparrow most. Such amazing birds.

What a wonderful winter wonderland! The cardinals are exceptional. I have not seen snow in over 15 years! It does look beautiful but I don't like being in it anymore. Glad that you, Sasha and her parents enjoyed this magical time in nature.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful series and nice to see Sasha out learning/enjoying nature.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful, delightful post, David! I love it when children are interested in nature and find such a great teacher and guide like you. My daughter would have loved that, too. The photos are wonderful and the ones with the seed on Sasha's hat and the birds taking up the seed are such a treasure. Thank you for this bright and beautiful post, it made my morning. Big hugs - Carola
ReplyDeleteMaking memories!! Sasha will certainly remember these journeys..Those earmuffs are huge!!! Wonderful pictures!

Hello David.
ReplyDeleteA white blanket spread over nature, good company, and wonderful birds.
What more could you wish for? :-)
All the best,

Kids belong outside regardless (sort of) the weather - we invented hats and gloves for that very reason! Hope all is well.
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
What a joyful post! Sasha is a delight to see in action here, a natural with the birds.
ReplyDeleteI think I know where all our birds are now! So few here, still. Everyone is talking about it.
Wonderful post, David. Sasha, like all children, loves to roll around in the snow. Feeding birds by hand is so nice; I can feel their feet on my fingers. We don't have much snow here, and the temperature is above freezing. Cardinals are very beautiful birds, but it's a shame they're migratory.

ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteI've finally got around to looking at your report with the beautiful winter photos. It really looks like a joyful walk in the snow, and the birds certainly were happy about the food you brought. How adorable that the chickadees even landed on Sasha's hat! 😊
Best wishes, Traude
