African Quailfinch

African Quailfinch Ortygospiza atricollis
Lake Chelekchecka, Ethiopia
12 January 2014

The only sighting we had of this species was this single female. Although not as distinctively marked as the male (as is so true with many species), it is nevertheless a delightful little bird and we were certainly happy to be able to photograph it.

I'm a life long birder. My interests are birds, nature, reading, books, outdoors, travel, food and wine.

  1. It does look attractive and small beside those thistles! I haven't been to Africa so haven't looked closely into the birds there, so didn't know of Quailfinches. It seems an odd combination!

  3. It sure looks tiny. You really did see lots of species on your Ethiopian marathon. I'll bet you look back now and remember these good moments.
