White-winged Scoter

White-winged Scoter Melanitta deglandi
Lake Ontario
7 December 2013

White-winged Scoter is common to abundant on Lake Ontario during the winter, finding a ready and plentiful source of food in the Zebra Mussels Dreissena polymorpha that now plague our inland waters. The white secondaries from which the bird derives its name are hidden until it takes flight. These males are easily distinguished by the white patch around their eye, and their brightly coloured bill.

  1. The bills on this family are intriguing! I saw a Black Scoter in Japan earlier this year and was impressed.

  2. We see three species of scoter on Lake Ontario during the winter. The first thing I check for is bill colour.
