Back Home from Costa Rica

We just returned from our fourth visit to this magical country and would do it again four times more in a heartbeat.
On this occasion I was joined by some of my closest and dearest friends - and that made it even more special.
Here they are in alphabetical order by first name.

Jim

Irrepressible, intelligent, always ready with a joke or two, and a beer connoisseur of distinction. It's no coincidence that "Jim" and "Joy" both start with "J."

Kuldip

Urbane, witty, a keen scholar, generous and a first class gentleman. Kuldip is always ready to help in any way that he can and offers wise counsel and sparkling repartee to all.

Lisa

Lisa is enthusiasm on steroids. What a pleasure to be around her. Every bird made her heart pitter patter and she embraced  the natural history of Costa Rica in all its magnificent splendour with runaway enthusiasm. She was concerned with the welfare of others; someone you could always count on.

Selwyn

Simply seeing Selwyn every day made me happy. He is always ready with a story or an anecdote, eternally cheerful, enthusiastic about life, just a great guy in every way. He never saw a banana he didn't like.

Tina

Tina is Lisa's big sister, tasked with the chore of keeping her in check! To enjoy the company of one of them is unalloyed pleasure, two is more than anyone might expect. They both elevate enthusiasm to a whole new level.

Trevor

Trevor is a slick dresser, sauve, debonair, a man of the world, a savant of distinction and a fine fellow with whom to have a glass of wine. Believe me, I have done it!

Victoria

Charming, witty, dedicated, sophisticated and a keen scholar who does a great deal of study before going on a birding trip, and becomes a fountain of knowledge for all. Selwyn is a lucky man to have such a wife.

Miriam

I started out by referring to my closest and dearest friends. My wife, Miriam, is of course the closest and dearest of all. I have no doubt that if you asked the other participants on the trip they would assure you that they enjoyed her presence as much as I did.
More will follow in due course as we download and edit the thousands of pictures, but now you know the people who make life so special. I am lucky to know them all.

David M. Gascoigne,
David M. Gascoigne,

I'm a life long birder. My interests are birds, nature, reading, books, outdoors, travel, food and wine.

    1. We started out in the Savegre area (three days) and then moved on to the Las Cruces Biological Station near San Vito (three days). Next, two days at La Selva Mar, followed by two days at Caño Negro, and the final two days in the Central Valley.

  32. Lots of fun I am sure especially with a great group of people. I am sad that Nigel did not think he could cope with Costa Rica but we had a ball in Namibia instead. Sadly out holiday this year has had to be cancelled and we are waiting on info as to whether N has to have back op. Medical is not that fast here anymore!! It was to be our last overseas holiday so what happens now other than fight with insurance I am not sure. Bisous mon ami Diane.

    1. Sorry to hear about Nigel’s problems, Diane. Excruciating, I am sure. I have one trip scheduled for Colombia in November, and that may be the last for me. There is still much of Canada we need to explore.

hear about and see your recent discoveries. Sadly, I have never been to Costa Rica and at this stage of my life will probably never get there. I will have to see it through your eyes which ain't all that bad!

  37. Hello David :)
I'm so glad to see you back safe and sound David .It's lovely to see your friends who joined you in Costa Rica all looking so happy, and I'm sure they are aware of how much their friendship means to you, and know what a good friend you are to them. How wonderful that you can all experience the joy of birding together. Miriam looks beautiful in her photo and instead of a group photo it was great to see everyone up close
for a change. I know editing takes time, especially with a huge amount of photos to go through, but suspense is good, when you know you are in for a treat. Looking forward to your next post.
    Hugs and kisses.

I recognize a lot of names from previous posts and it is so nice to see the faces behind those names now. And of course Miriam - such a lovely photo of a beautiful woman. Now we only need a similar lovely photo of yourself, David, otherwise the group is not complete. Big hugs - Carola

  41. Nice post! You have a very warm and charitable side, which is quite different from your angry side when it comes to writing about villains. I’m not naming one in particular because I don’t want to get on his enemies list. ;-)

  45. What a nice post to introduce your friends and traveling companions, David, and to tell a bit about them as well. It was lovely to see that you save the lovely Miriam for last, but certainly not least. Anyone who has traveled, well knows the task of going through images takes time, and your blog friends will be rewarded with patience.
