A Television Experience

A few weeks ago I received an inquiry from Johnny Mazza, a producer at the local CTV station, about doing a spot on television to feature birding and to promote an interest in nature.
Always anxious to foster a love of nature and enlist people onto the environmental bandwagon, I was happy to oblige.
The Mill Race in St. Jacobs was selected as the location for the shoot and I enlisted several of my friends to take part in this adventure.

Johnny proved to be a joy to work with, professional, personable, and competent; everyone felt at ease with him.
     Even the chipmunks!

We had told Johnny of the fascinating activity of hand-feeding a bird and it was not long before a few inquisitive chickadees showed up.

Our group meandered along, all the time trying to remember to point out aspects of our stroll that, while being obvious to us, might not have been familiar to Johnny. Francine held out her hand and was successful in  attracting a chickadee right in front of Johnny's nose.

We had only binoculars to carry, except for Adrienne who wielded her camera, but Johnny was weighted down with equipment.

Even frogs and toads can cause great excitement for naturalists.

Some of us had walked ahead a little way and noticed a doe with her fawn. Adrienne, as only Adrienne can, captured a wonderful image.

Unfortunately, Johnny caught up to us mere moments after the deer blended into the bushes and disappeared from view.
In many instances families of Mallard ducklings are almost as big as their parents.

     Not much escaped our attention.

Most of the birds were very active and difficult for Johnny to capture; by the time he could train his lens on them they were gone.
I was a little more stationary for an interview.

Heather was happy to share a moment too.

And Francine was no less willing.

Johnny made everyone feel at ease as they explained their love of nature.

Here he looks quite pensive, no doubt weighing his next move.

Walter was in great form as he did his first television interview ever.

Adrienne, as always, was the professional in our midst.

By now, you are doubtless wondering how it all turned out. Here is the link to the segment that was shown on the 6 pm news a couple of days ago.
Don't bother looking for my good side - I don't have one!

I'm a life long birder. My interests are birds, nature, reading, books, outdoors, travel, food and wine.

    1. On my doorstep is almost true, YAM. It's about ten minutes from home, but Laurel Creek Conservation Area is only about two minutes away. Lots of green space and natural areas around us.

  3. Nada mejor que la colaboración de unos buenos amigos, para hacer un buen programa en la televisión. Seguro que ha tenido mucho éxito.

  6. Sadly the video refused to play for me. Which made me sad and grumpy. I am so glad that you and your friends got to share your obsession and the incredible beauty. I hope it attracts many, many more people to your causes.

  12. How thrilling that you got this opportunity to promote the love of nature in the world around us. Who knows, this little TV segment might just inspire someone to start on a journey of discovery as a naturalist themselves :)

  18. Nice video.

How nice to share the love for nature with others.

I hope to be able to go out into nature with a nice pair of binoculars in a while.
    Together with my husband.

Fortunately, we also have many birds around the house and in the area.

When we sail on the boat we also see many water birds.

    Greetings from far!

  20. What an interesting and fun experience. The video was interesting, and the photos delightful as always. I will say that after seeing Adrienne's lens I felt a little better about my ability to capture images of distant creatures!

  21. Adrienne is far more than her lens. I admire her work immensely. She has a wonderful eye for composition and invests hours and hours into some of her subjects. She has just achieved outstanding results with Eastern Bluebirds but not without aching limbs from long sessions in a cramped hide. She works wonders with her editing skills too. You will have to come to Waterloo and I will take you to her gallery. Then I know a great spot to take you for an expresso and a cannoli!

  22. Super la vidéo! C'est sympa de vous voir en "vrai" avec le voix :D
La photo de la biche et du faon est très belle.

  24. Excellent video! Good job! I like walking through the woods vicariously with you. BTW, regarding your comments disappearing on various blogs, the same thing happened to me. For those blogs, I changed my browser to Chrome. But for your blog, I have to use Microsoft Edge, as it won't let me use Chrome. Easy-Peasy, no problem! Gigi Hawaii

I will try and blog again soon, but now the garden is taking up so much time in amongst the general run of things. I do though have some reasonable photos to blog when I find the time.
Keep well and take care both of you. Diane

  33. Wow, David, that was fun seeing you on TV! That is such a peaceful trail to immerse oneself in. It is, like you said, very soul satisfying. And I feel the same way as Francine stated "the forest is my healing place"! Keep well and be happy.

    1. If I needed to heal, Martha, it would be mine too, but a lifetime spent in such places has probably helped me not to feel in need of mental or physical healing - especially not mental.

  34. How lovely to see and hear you, David. I enjoyed walking with you, loved when you explained where the name robin comes from. These are all those little snippets that are so interesting. If I should ever be in your area, I would like a guided tour with you, please.

  36. David, thanks for providing the link so we could all see yourself and your fellow birders. Adrienne captured a lovely shot of the doe and fawn and she certainly totes a very large lens for those opportunities which always seem to be so fleeting. Like others have commented, it would be wonderful to go on a walk with you and your group and "free" is always good!

  42. What a delight, David. It was almost like being at your side learning and loving the natural settings that you share with us every week. And let me correct you ... you don't have a bad side! Everyone seemed comfortable and knowledgeable and inspiring. It is not any wonder that you love your life.
Thank you for messaging me through others that your comments were disappearing. I did go to my span(I had to has Rain how to find it) and yes indeed, two of your comments were there along with many others that I have missed without realizing I was missing them. What a shame that Blogger can't control the comments better than that. Anyway, it is always a pleasure meeting up with you each week as I do share your love of nature and your group seem like they have great fun together. Stay well, David and thank you again for all of your wonderful pictures and explanations.

  44. I'll be over to watch the video! I'm thrilled they chose you as their guide to nature -- who would possibly be better? And your gang of friends probably had fun, both with all the sightings AND the TV part! I am WILD about that overhead shot of the ducks -- water so clear you can see their feet! And the deer... all lovely.

  47. Hi David - this was brilliant - so good to hear and see you ... and to see your enthusiasm for your Waterloo area - wonderful range of birds, amphibians, insects and sounds ... I hope Johnny will be able to bring friends and family out to share the area and to learn more ... and subsequently perhaps bring out other groups ... the young, adults and special needs' members - who'll all enjoy the experience.

I hope you give us updates as Johnny, the producer, works through his thoughts on this great day out ... opening the door to so much ... lovely to see all your friends happily step up to the microphone ... especially Heather ...

Such fun - thanks so much - cheers Hilary

  62. What a fascinating news segment. I wish our local news would share some more of this sort of information. Lately we only seem to get doom and gloom with no relief. Nice to see those who often feature in still photos on your blog walking and talking, too.

  64. I am very happy that you have been interviewed by the local channel and that you spread these topics about nature and your activity, congratulations! In addition to the photos, I like the video, where I can hear your voice for the first time and the best of all is that I was able to understand a lot of the words you said, it made me very happy, since it is difficult for me to understand when people speak English at a normal speed; it is more that you were the person interviewed that I could understand the easiest. I also liked listening to the other people who always accompany you on the outings and by now I've seen them many times and I recognize them well. A big hug
