A few weeks ago I received an inquiry from Johnny Mazza, a producer at the local CTV station, about doing a spot on television to feature birding and to promote an interest in nature.
Always anxious to foster a love of nature and enlist people onto the environmental bandwagon, I was happy to oblige.
The Mill Race in St. Jacobs was selected as the location for the shoot and I enlisted several of my friends to take part in this adventure.
Johnny proved to be a joy to work with, professional, personable, and competent; everyone felt at ease with him.
Even the chipmunks!
We had told Johnny of the fascinating activity of hand-feeding a bird and it was not long before a few inquisitive chickadees showed up.
Our group meandered along, all the time trying to remember to point out aspects of our stroll that, while being obvious to us, might not have been familiar to Johnny. Francine held out her hand and was successful in attracting a chickadee right in front of Johnny's nose.
We had only binoculars to carry, except for Adrienne who wielded her camera, but Johnny was weighted down with equipment.
Unfortunately, Johnny caught up to us mere moments after the deer blended into the bushes and disappeared from view.
In many instances families of Mallard ducklings are almost as big as their parents.
Most of the birds were very active and difficult for Johnny to capture; by the time he could train his lens on them they were gone.
I was a little more stationary for an interview.
By now, you are doubtless wondering how it all turned out. Here is the link to the segment that was shown on the 6 pm news a couple of days ago.
Don't bother looking for my good side - I don't have one!
How nice to watch you on TV, David! I think you are looking great :)
ReplyDeleteHugs and kisses, Marit

ReplyDeleteOh yes, that was so fun to watch and get even more of a feel for the David we read all the time! As well as seeing some of that lovely walking space you have on your doorsteps... YAM xx
On my doorstep is almost true, YAM. It's about ten minutes from home, but Laurel Creek Conservation Area is only about two minutes away. Lots of green space and natural areas around us.
DeleteNada mejor que la colaboración de unos buenos amigos, para hacer un buen programa en la televisión. Seguro que ha tenido mucho éxito.
ReplyDeleteIt was great to involve fellow naturalists.
DeleteNature…”It satisfies my soul.” So true. Great interview
ReplyDeleteAnd to you my voice is no surprise.
DeleteThat was a great news video! Now when I read your blog I'll hear your voice.
ReplyDeleteSadly the video refused to play for me. Which made me sad and grumpy. I am so glad that you and your friends got to share your obsession and the incredible beauty. I hope it attracts many, many more people to your causes.
ReplyDeleteWhen I back on the computer, I will send the link by email, and see if that works, Sue.
DeleteThank you.
DeleteLovely. Thank you for sharing this. You sound just like I had imagined!
ReplyDeleteThat's good...I think!
DeleteGreat shots. I enjoyed the video
ReplyDeleteThat was great David - I really enjoyed walking with you all. I was so happy that the video played for me over here, as at first I thought it might not work.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you enjoyed it, Rosemary.
Delete...my goal is to stay incognito.
DeleteSo far you have succeeded.
DeleteThat is really fun!
ReplyDeleteYou're a superstar! What a nice segment.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Lovely video. Too bad the deer could not make it to the film.
ReplyDeleteHow thrilling that you got this opportunity to promote the love of nature in the world around us. Who knows, this little TV segment might just inspire someone to start on a journey of discovery as a naturalist themselves :)
ReplyDeleteThis is FANTASTIC, David. I have thoroughly enjoyed the video, too short though :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the video. Seeing you and listening to you made me feel I was right there walking with the group.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations David and to everyone who took part in the presentation - loved the video and it's good to hear voices and see you all walking in such a lovely place. Well done!
ReplyDeleteOMGosh! That was a wonderful video and loved all your photos! So nice to see you and your many friends. :)
ReplyDeleteA great job done by all, David, and for me it gave a welcome feeling of being closer to a cherished friend once more.
ReplyDeleteNice video.
ReplyDeleteHow nice to share the love for nature with others.
I hope to be able to go out into nature with a nice pair of binoculars in a while.
Together with my husband.
Fortunately, we also have many birds around the house and in the area.
When we sail on the boat we also see many water birds.
Greetings from far!
A great experience, well documented !
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day !
Anna
What an interesting and fun experience. The video was interesting, and the photos delightful as always. I will say that after seeing Adrienne's lens I felt a little better about my ability to capture images of distant creatures!
ReplyDeleteAdrienne is far more than her lens. I admire her work immensely. She has a wonderful eye for composition and invests hours and hours into some of her subjects. She has just achieved outstanding results with Eastern Bluebirds but not without aching limbs from long sessions in a cramped hide. She works wonders with her editing skills too. You will have to come to Waterloo and I will take you to her gallery. Then I know a great spot to take you for an expresso and a cannoli!
ReplyDeleteSuper la vidéo! C'est sympa de vous voir en "vrai" avec le voix :D
ReplyDeleteLa photo de la biche et du faon est très belle.
Bonne journée
Beautiful capture of the chipmunks and doe with her fawn. Thanks for sharing the link for the video. I really enjoyed watching the video. That is a nice place for the video shoot.
ReplyDeleteExcellent video! Good job! I like walking through the woods vicariously with you. BTW, regarding your comments disappearing on various blogs, the same thing happened to me. For those blogs, I changed my browser to Chrome. But for your blog, I have to use Microsoft Edge, as it won't let me use Chrome. Easy-Peasy, no problem! Gigi Hawaii
ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeletesuch a pleasure to see you 'live', and walking in an area so familiar to you.
Marvelou that they wanted tot make a tv-item of your bird-watchng/walking group.
Best regards, Corrie
A great opportunity to share your love of nature. Fantastic video, well done, David.
ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeletesuch a pleasure to see you 'live' on this tv-item.
Marvelous that they did an item on your walking birdwatching group.
Best regards, Corrie
What a nice segment. And fun to see you and hear your voice.
Eres demasiado amable, amigo Juan.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on a fab blip with great photos. I will save the video for one day when I might be able to watch it. !
ReplyDeleteI will try and blog again soon, but now the garden is taking up so much time in amongst the general run of things. I do though have some reasonable photos to blog when I find the time.
Keep well and take care both of you. Diane
The image with the deer is really wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWow, David, that was fun seeing you on TV! That is such a peaceful trail to immerse oneself in. It is, like you said, very soul satisfying. And I feel the same way as Francine stated "the forest is my healing place"! Keep well and be happy.
ReplyDeleteIf I needed to heal, Martha, it would be mine too, but a lifetime spent in such places has probably helped me not to feel in need of mental or physical healing - especially not mental.
DeleteHow lovely to see and hear you, David. I enjoyed walking with you, loved when you explained where the name robin comes from. These are all those little snippets that are so interesting. If I should ever be in your area, I would like a guided tour with you, please.
ReplyDeleteI will be at your service, Carola.
DeleteQuerido David me encanta el vídeo, escuchar vuestras voces y caminar a vuestro lado por tan bonito lugar. Las fotos son muy bonitas. Enhorabuena para todos. Un fuerte abrazo.
ReplyDeleteDavid, thanks for providing the link so we could all see yourself and your fellow birders. Adrienne captured a lovely shot of the doe and fawn and she certainly totes a very large lens for those opportunities which always seem to be so fleeting. Like others have commented, it would be wonderful to go on a walk with you and your group and "free" is always good!
ReplyDeleteI will have to run an outing for bloggers!
DeleteWhat a great adventure!.....It is exciting to have CTV as companion for your adventures!.....Abrazotes, Marcela
ReplyDeleteHello David, this is my second try, to tell you how much I enjoyed the video of you and your group on TV and hearing your voice for the first time was also enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteLovely images of the wild life you encountered-
Hugs from Portugal.
This time you succeeded, Sonjia. Thanks for persevering.
DeleteBravo! Nice tv spot! It was great to see your nature walks "in action". What a nice way to highlight your love, your area and your walking group also. Thanks for sharing! hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your TV feature! Well deserved, off to watch it now
ReplyDeleteDavid, you and your group deserve to be recognized and what a nice way to have it done. Congratulations. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a delight, David. It was almost like being at your side learning and loving the natural settings that you share with us every week. And let me correct you ... you don't have a bad side! Everyone seemed comfortable and knowledgeable and inspiring. It is not any wonder that you love your life.
ReplyDeleteThank you for messaging me through others that your comments were disappearing. I did go to my span(I had to has Rain how to find it) and yes indeed, two of your comments were there along with many others that I have missed without realizing I was missing them. What a shame that Blogger can't control the comments better than that. Anyway, it is always a pleasure meeting up with you each week as I do share your love of nature and your group seem like they have great fun together. Stay well, David and thank you again for all of your wonderful pictures and explanations.
Andrea @ From the Sol
Thanks so much, Andrea. This whole issue with comments getting lost is getting a little ridiculous.
DeleteVery exciting and it seems like you really are a great, fun group!
ReplyDeleteI'll be over to watch the video! I'm thrilled they chose you as their guide to nature -- who would possibly be better? And your gang of friends probably had fun, both with all the sightings AND the TV part! I am WILD about that overhead shot of the ducks -- water so clear you can see their feet! And the deer... all lovely.
ReplyDeleteThat shot of the deer family is a marvel.
ReplyDeleteAll the more remarkable since Adrienne had but seconds to take the shot.
DeleteMe encantó verte y escucharte , tu voz es como la imaginaba. Un abrazo querido amigo David.
ReplyDeleteHi David - this was brilliant - so good to hear and see you ... and to see your enthusiasm for your Waterloo area - wonderful range of birds, amphibians, insects and sounds ... I hope Johnny will be able to bring friends and family out to share the area and to learn more ... and subsequently perhaps bring out other groups ... the young, adults and special needs' members - who'll all enjoy the experience.
ReplyDeleteI hope you give us updates as Johnny, the producer, works through his thoughts on this great day out ... opening the door to so much ... lovely to see all your friends happily step up to the microphone ... especially Heather ...
Such fun - thanks so much - cheers Hilary
David I seem to find you everywhere. You are famous:-)
ReplyDeleteFunny that the professional photographer/videographer learned what every amateur birder knows about trying to capture images of birds!
ReplyDeletebest... mae at maefood.blgospot.com
David, finding something that satisfies your soul is just amazing! Great segment, it was so nice to hear you talking and see your group! What a lovely area to be in nature! Thanks so much for sharing. I love Adrienne's photo of the doe and fawn! Love the frogs and toads too!
ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteIt was certainly a very interesting day for everyone who participated and it will be for everyone who will see the programme.
I enjoyed watching you on TV, and I loved walking with you through these wonderful places in the middle of nature, those moments spent there, they certainly brighten the eye and enlighten the soul.
All these beautiful faces for Friday Face Off. Thank you for joining in.
ReplyDeleteHi TV-personality,
ReplyDeleteIt must have been a special experience for you to promote birding in one of the areas where you like to wander a lot. You and the other participants did your best. Let's hope everybody is satisfied.
Greetings, Kees
Hello David,
ReplyDeleteYou are a perfect nature guide for this video. What a thrill to be on TV, now everyone will know your spot for viewing nature. The deer photo is sweet, love the ducks too. Great post and photos. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, enjoy your weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.
Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Hello. Thanks for the link to the video. It was nice to see you there, your birder friends and the wonderful nature where you can watch birds.
ReplyDeleteTake care.
Congratulations, you are a positive celebrity who has developed ecological behavior, respect for nature and nature. David, you are amazing, I admire you.
ReplyDeleteHugs and greetings :)
Thank you, Lucja-Maria. Your are very kind.
DeleteQuite a experience!! So nice to see you live on TV ! I loved seeing it!
ReplyDeleteCongrets, Maia
That is great David. Sorry for my late reaction on your post. I sure will have a look at the link you added. Wonderful you were asked to do this project. I hope more and more people will become enthousiastic for nature with this promotion.
ReplyDeleteWarm regards,
Roos
Great to see you and the onther nature lovers in this video David!
DeleteRoos
Glad you enjoyed it, Roos.
DeleteI am pleased to say that the video worked for me :)
ReplyDeleteGreat to see and hear you, and to see everyone else.
A great video, thank you.
All the best Jan
Appreciated your video. Also loved the photos shared here. I've found in years past much pleasure sitting still in the forest to experience the sounds and see all the creatures that begin to appear once they become accustomed to ones presence.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fascinating news segment. I wish our local news would share some more of this sort of information. Lately we only seem to get doom and gloom with no relief. Nice to see those who often feature in still photos on your blog walking and talking, too.
ReplyDeleteThat's exciting! I enjoyed watching the video and seeing you "in person" (well, sort of!). Hope your segment inspired some new nature enthusiasts!
ReplyDeleteI am very happy that you have been interviewed by the local channel and that you spread these topics about nature and your activity, congratulations! In addition to the photos, I like the video, where I can hear your voice for the first time and the best of all is that I was able to understand a lot of the words you said, it made me very happy, since it is difficult for me to understand when people speak English at a normal speed; it is more that you were the person interviewed that I could understand the easiest. I also liked listening to the other people who always accompany you on the outings and by now I've seen them many times and I recognize them well. A big hug
ReplyDeleteI am glad you enjoyed it Hernán. Of course, I see you frequently on your videos. Un abrazo amigo mío.
