A Visit from Lily (and Heather too!)

      Hello everyone.
This is Lily and I am very happy to "see" you all again via David's blog.
My mom and I had a great visit with Miriam and David at their house, where we started out in the kitchen for tea and cookies. Well, the adults had tea and I had water. The cookie was really good, the kind you can squish in your hand and strew crumbs all over the floor. That's the best kind!

I guess my hair was pretty staticky. How much fun is that?
But best of all was when we went to the family room and David let me handle some of his bird carvings and statues.
Climbing up on the hearth is always a good start.

I think that David has some very precious and valuable carvings so he put those high up where I couldn't reach them, but there was still lots to enjoy, and I didn't get to even half of them. I started out with a Northern Shoveler and an American Black Duck.

The adults always tell me the real name and don't talk to me in baby gobbledegook, and I like that.

You see how I was allowed to handle them. I have a Canvasback in my hand and my mom is sliding a Northern Pintail towards me.

So far we had only gotten a few of the birds from the family room, but David's office has lots more and we went down there together.

Did you notice that he has wonderful eggs made of marble too?

I am quite sure that little people like me have special powers over adults, because every time I said, "More", David would take me to his office and I chose new ones to bring up to show to Mom and Miriam.
There are a few stairs down to the office, and if I just stood there at the top, David would pick me up and lift me down to the bottom so that I didn't have to struggle with the steps - and it kept my hands free to carry new treasures too.

Just look at how much we gathered together.

It is really fun to have big people as friends, and I find that they are always anxious to help.

Maybe next time David and I can sit together and look at some of his wonderful bird books. I had better wash my hands before I do that!
See you again soon. Hugs and kisses from Lily.

Oh my word, Lily, what an incredibly fun day for you (and, I am sure, the big peeps!) There are very few young ladies in the world who get to play with such special things. What is more, you were totally dressed for the occasion - so pretty. (I forgive the hair, for my own is untamable!) Sending huggies right back across to you, YAM-aunty xxx

  17. She will be grateful for such experiences and learning for the rest of her life, even if she doesn't become an ornithologist - which she probably will. She will at least love nature I am sure (and take good care of it). Well done big folks.

  21. Hi David - totally wonderful to see Lily on her visit ... I was wondering about the great outdoors - those temperatures are rather 'cruel' at the moment. Brilliant she's going to be always curious and learning ... delightful post - thanks for sharing with us - cheers Hilary

  23. Lily is a very lucky little girl to have such caring and thoughful friends along with her Mum, who all share their great love of wildlife with her.
She is a lovely little girl with gorgeous "staticky" hair.

  24. Bravo, David! Lily is so lucky to have you as a mentor. These lessons in respect for property and wildlife will benefit all, and your avoidance of baby-talk is exemplary. The real beauty of it is that, from your photos, it is evident that she's actually having a whale of a time!

  25. Hi David.

This is amazing. how little Lily can learn so much from all of you around her.
    You see her enjoying.
And I enjoy this side of the p.c. double along.
With the beautiful birds and eggs she shows and of course from Lily.
    It's a hit.

    Greetings from Patricia.

  27. Two things struck me: both delightful. One is that you don't talk 'baby talk' to Lily, but offer her the proper names of the treasures she's finding. The other is your patience, which makes an afternoon like this possible. I was lucky enough to have grandparents who weren't well educated and who had little economic security, but who had infinite patience, and taught me to pay attention to the world just as you're teaching Lily.
