The Old and the New

Last Friday we met Heather and Lily for our weekly walk to do a little birding, but mainly to get caught up on the events of the previous week, and to witness the rapid development of our precious Lily, for whom an additional week of life is a huge increment.

For this week's walk we chose to go to Columbia Lake, where there are stroller-friendly paths, a pleasant variety of habitats, and at times lots of birds.

We agreed to meet at the parking area close to Brubacher House, a venerable old building in Waterloo, with a good deal of local history attached to it.

In fact one of Miriam's relatives was for a time resident here.

So, this is the "old" referred to in the title.

     And here is the "new".

Brubacher House is at the perimeter of a high tech commercial park where IT firms dominate the landscape.

It was actually Miriam who came up with the title, for this post, for with a bit of a wicked glint in her eyes she further pointed out that here is the old.....

.....and, yet again, the new - Lily of the wild hairdo!

I think that in the past month or two I have posted more images of myself than I have in the entire twelve-year history of this blog. Rest assured that it is not going to continue! A picture of oneself once in a while is all well and good, but far too often seems to me to verge on narcissism, especially when multiple portraits are included in the same post. There are more interesting subjects to look at than me!

Like the views of Colombia Lake, for example.

As you may observe, the level of water in the lake is very low, but people try their luck at fishing regardless. Rarely do they have much success, at least based on our observations; no doubt this Great Egret (Ardea alba) had better luck.

It is strenuous work for a young girl to be bathed and dressed, and placed in and out of a car seat, and then into a stroller. Time for a nap!

Too bad, Lily, you missed this Grey Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) on the fence rail. Can you see it?

A few more perspectives on the walk at Columbia Lake will give you an idea of how agreeable a spot it is.

Lily slept for most of the time, and woke up with a big yawn.

     Which turned into a frown.....

     And then became a smile.

     It's good to be alive.

Soon it was time to go home. Goodbye Miriam and David. See you next week!

  1. Both the Old and the New look pretty good to me :)
Columbia Lake looks like a most attractive place for a stroll - and one day Lily will stay awake!

  2. I must say you have a silly grin on your face which I find amusing and rather nice.
Lily is a beauty and her hair is very different.
That house is wonderful, love houses like that.
    Take care.

  3. Hi David. Lovely to see the old and the new in this post. Venerable old building and people are all good to look at, and Lily is simply a joy for the eyes. What a cutie. The bird photos are wonderful, but Lily is once again the star of the show. Sorry David! Glad you were all able to get out and find a stroller-friendly place to view wildlife. The water in many lakes and reservoirs is very low, too, and in the south of Germany they have had non-stop heavy rain and floods! Have a great day, thanks for sharing the lovely photos, hugs to you and M, Valerie

  4. Yet another lovely post.
Including the photographs of yourself - though I will not inflict photos of me on anyone.
I hope I can post this comment, but may not be able to. Fingers crossed.

  5. Hi David.

    Beautiful walking environment.
What a special bird that Katvogel.
And wonderful to see Lilly, I enjoy it.
I like your humor in your writing.

    You look good David. ;-)

  6. When I read the title, I thought about Germany at once. I guess it have been many people from Europe who settled in Canada. It's a beautiful house.
My grandfather worked for a few years in Canada, and it was for a time plans for moving to Canada. It was hard times here in Europe in the 1920-1930 with few jobs. Things changed for the better, and the plans for moving to Canada was canceled. In theory I could be Canadian, David.
Nice photo of you, and Lily of course!

    2. Yes, that's true David, but I have enough garden here :)

  7. So, you get to go places and meet people! I remember that kind of day - well, maybe! I see the isolation beard is growing well, as is the new person! She may not know who you are if the beard meets a razor one day!

Very little to report from this end - I am well and truly over being locked down: although the Blackbird in our back garden is singing is heart out which is good to hear.

Hope all is well. Cheers - Stewart M - Locked Down Melbourne

Aw sweet Lily, adding fragrance to David's posts!!! &*> you are right, the occasional 'me' shot is fine; I too avoid being in front of the camera as much as is at all possible. But one's readers to like to have the occasional glimpse of their host! YAM xx

It certainly is a beautiful place to go walking take care, cheers Sheryl

  12. Hello,

I like the title Miriam picked out for your post. Lily is just adorable, cute photos. I do not share many photos of myself, more shadow selfies. Love the beautiful egret. Look like a nice walk and outing with Lily! Take care, enjoy your day!

  19. Good title – Miriam! Appropriate too … I see your relative’s house stands on lands that have been occupied for millennia – must be so interesting to see the history. The house looks in pretty good shape now … while the ‘old man’ doesn’t do badly, does he?!

Hi David – great to see you … and to see Lily and Heather … and to know that these outings are going to be relatively regular. That park does look ideal for buggies and for a wander – with some lovely parkland to see.

An amazing area to live – so close to so much water and all the opportunities for wildlife afforded by it. Delightful – clever Miriam for her title choice! Take care - Hilary

  25. Good to see such a nice photo of you David and I just love the countryside around you. Give me the old buildings any day, and the older they are, they longer they will last if someone does not decide to destroy them! Lily appears to be a very happy baby, I am not a baby person, but if she keeps smiling in your blog she just might sway me.
Take care and best wishes to you all, Diane

I have also been fascinated with that mansion. Spectacular, very distinguished.

  35. Much prefer the old building to the new. As for people it is always good to put a face to a name and Lily is a delight.

  36. Must admit, I would rather see pix of birds and animals than babies. Don't tell anyone, but I have never been much into babies. The Brubacher House looked a nice house. Not seen it before. Not seen the new hi tech building before either. I hope the heron caught his dinner today. Our first trip in Ontario, in '76, we were up near Thunder Bay, water was very low that year, and we rented a dinghy, went out fishing and caught 7 whitefish which the locals said would have been impossible with normal water levels. Normally only caught in the winter.

  41. Lily's so darned cute! I think I'm into the OLD building more than the new (which is probably more efficient -- still, not nearly so lovely). And loving the beard on the Old David and the hair on the New Lily! And anytime I see an egret, I smile!

Autumm has not got to you yet??Here the rain has started it is like a wall of rain..Covid infected are rising in the students camps at my place and the ring effect show up on the elderly homes and other places(Why do they have to party soo much)My plan for a hike with the train to the mountains went wrong as there are too much virus in the city and else where.

  51. We enjoy exploring and so Brubacher House would be someplace for us to explore and enjoy. It's nice that you were all able to enjoy the walk, including Lily at such a young age. Appreciation of nature is good to start very early and she will have a good foundation with the help of her mom and yourself and Miriam.

  52. You've grown into that beard rather well, David. Great to see that Lily's growing well, but don't be fooled by that smile- it's probably just wind. Only just noticed that your spelling of Grey aligns with the UK rather than USA - for some strange reason I expected the opposite, but should have realised that Canada's allegiancies don't lie in that direction.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. American spelling is something I have never liked and nor does the rest of the English-speaking world. Grey for me will never be gray - after all it's a colour you know, not a color!

      Delete
    2. I admire your valour David. I find I do slip into American spelling now and again as you have probably noticed. Richard, I have maintained for years that Americans don't speak (or write) English.

      Delete
  53. I smiled at the discussion just above. If I'm not writing and speaking in English, which language might I be using? Language is as varied and delightful as the people who speak it, just as the voices of birds vary not only among species, but even within given species. I know a certain Green Heron who sounds as though he's speaking Egret!

Anyway: this is a lovely spot that you've shown. I'm often intrigued by the names of your places, and how familiar they are. I grew up visiting a grandfather in Waterloo, Iowa, and that long walk to the San Bernard Oak that I wrote about took place in the Columbia Bottomlands. It makes me smile to think that in future years Lily may remember her 'Waterloo' with the same affection I feel for mine.

    Replies
    1. And of course there is Waterloo Station in London, Waterloo of Napoleonic comeuppance in Belgium and doubtless many others. Miriam and I were musing about the Columbia used here. It has such an American connotation to it and we could not think of anywhere else we have visited in Canada where the name Columbia occurs, other than the province of British Columbia of course.
