John and Susan Pries, the owners of this paradisaical sanctuary along the Conestogo River have been gracious in welcoming Miriam and me several times. And everyone else is welcome too.
Where else can you go to be greeted by a very accessible Osprey family? Mom was there as usual.
And it won't be long before the kids are ready to strike out on their own.
It has given us hours of pleasure to watch these birds almost from the first day they arrived back from the south.
John is a consummate naturalist who has recorded 131 species of birds at RiverSong, to say nothing of Snapping Turtles and Midland Painted Turtles, Milk Snakes and Red-bellied Snakes, Eastern Garter Snakes, American Toads, Leopard, Chorus, and Green Frogs, Bullfrogs and Spring Peepers. What would a riverside property be without Muskrats? Deer visit and Groundhogs and Raccoons find a home there. Meadow Voles and Deermice seek food and shelter. And we haven't even mentioned butterflies and moths, dragonflies and damselflies, coleoptera, hymenoptera, hemiptera and diptera - the list goes on. A wide range of trees populate the property, wildflowers thrive in abundance, ferns in profusion.
For the avid birder, or for the most casual of budding naturalists, a bird sightings list is provided with a field guide and binoculars for those who don't have their own.
Local artists are able to display their work which is offered for sale.
Most of us arrive by car, but some choose a more ecologically friendly alternative.
Last year, John and Susan, decided to retire from the catering side of the business, while retaining their residence at RiverSong, and the commercial operation was transferred to Chef Bruce Duff.
I am sure that Bruce could not have imagined that soon after starting his venture the pandemic would essentially shut down his business. He has persevered, however, and now that patio service is permitted, is doing well, serving a range of delicious food.
In addition to the permanent menu, daily offerings are available.
On a hot summer's day, what could be more appealing than homemade ice cream?
The patio is very appealing.
At present Bruce is offering patio dining only (and takeout) but when the cold weather arrives he has ample room inside to accommodate his clientèle, while scrupulously maintaining the mandated distance requirements.
It bears pointing out that anyone eating at RiverSong is free to roam the property and take advantage of the becalming, soothing atmosphere of this tranquil spot.
It is just the antidote for frazzled nerves caused by the pace of modern society, or angst generated by COVID-19. This is the place to put your phone away and immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty that is RiverSong.
Patrons come for many reasons. Some just to enjoy excellent food at reasonable prices, but many I have no doubt have earmarked RiverSong as their favourite lunch venue for all the reasons described above.
And there are goodies to take home too.
Perhaps we will see you on the patio soon.
Before heading out to RiverSong feel free to contact John (john.h.pries@gmail.com) to see whether he is available to give you a tour of the property, or contact me and I will organize an outing for you and accompany you to interpret the wildlife if you wish.
In difficult times such as we are going through now, it behooves each one of us to support local businesses, which will continue to be the lifeblood of our communities. Chef Duff will appreciate your support and you will discover a truly pleasurable corner of this wonderful landscape we call home.
Hi! Wonderful post! And then such a nice cafe! Here I could imagine take a break from photography and just ate the delicious good food! You are lucky!
ReplyDeleteLiked that bird of prey in the nest so you have got such a nice picture of
All in all a very nice post!
Anita
It looks wonderful there, David. It must be very nice to visit the place. Beautiful patio.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend!
Looks so relaxing and lovely. I hope you got to see some of that Noah’s Ark list of creatures along with your lunch. I see they have the bird books and binoculars at the ready for guests when something appears!
ReplyDeleteWe saw lots, Cynthia. We meandered around the property for an hour and a half before lunch. The highlight for me was a tiny American Toad that could sit on my thumbnail.
DeleteWhat a fabulous place. Thank you for this vicarious visit.
ReplyDeleteI wish i could visit this amazing place,David!
ReplyDeleteI like the patio and that beautiful garden!
Raspberry,white chocolate ice cream,my favorite!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful place!
Enjoy your weekend!
Dimi...
Eagles are beautiful in the wild.
ReplyDeleteThe terrace is spacious.
Hi Both,
ReplyDeleteLooks an amazing place just to visit let alone to eat, this Pandemic has been very hard on a lot of small business world wide, again good to see your Osprey.
You both stay safe,
John
Now that looks like a perfect place for a daytrip! Nature, Ospreys and food! It's on my list for when the weather cools down.
ReplyDeleteBe sure to let me know, Karen. Bear in mind that Ospreys are migratory and will have departed long before there is any possibility of ice on the water.
DeleteI'm looking towards the middle/end of August David.
DeleteLet me know your date as soon as you nail it down.
DeleteHello David,
ReplyDeleteIt looks and sounds like a lovely place. A great habitat for the wildlife! The Ospreys are a welcome sight. There is a nice menu and the ice cream would make me happy. If I were in the area I would definitely try to visit the River Song! I enjoyed your review. Have a happy day!
Maybe one day, Eileen. It's not so far.
DeleteOooh. And ahhhh.
ReplyDeleteHOW I wish I could visit this delightful spot.
Bonuses at every turn.
Hari OM
ReplyDeleteA place of respite for sure... YAM xx
You captured the Osprey family beautifully.
ReplyDeleteI’d love to taste the ice cream!
It sounds delightful and the chance to see Osprey as well, wow. Somebody in the Dordogne spotted an osprey this morning - interesting, though I gather it hangs out at a private dam so it is not easy to visit anywhere nearby :-(( Have a good Sunday Diane
ReplyDeleteIf we lived anywhere near RiverSong and if we could travel, this place would definitely be on our road trip list, David. We would come to enjoy the outdoors and then definitely stay for dining as Chef Duff's place looked wonderful and homemade ice cream too! Those were great osprey shots of the adults and young ones.
ReplyDeleteWell, if ever you make it this way, I promise I will buy the ice cream.
DeleteBusinesses are really suffering here too. This place looks great!
ReplyDeleteA great place indeed the way you describe it David. After a long walk the Ice cream sounds appealing as it it home made. To bad we still can not take a plane so I have to see in your coming blogs when people had a tour at the place.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Roos
You have the places.
ReplyDeleteIf only it was close enough to visit David.
ReplyDeleteRiver Song sounds and looks like a great place, with lovely sights and delicious food.
ReplyDeleteA visit to such a place makes one feel good, considering the messy, worrying times we live in.
Hi David! What a beautiful post. This is the sort of place I would love to visit. It looks so calm, and welcoming, with beautiful nature, art, nice people and good food and ice-cream - perfect! Especially at this time, we need such places where we can escape, body and soul. And I'm happy that it didn't disappear during Covid, as so many other businesses world-wide have done. Thanks for sharing, have a great Sunday, hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteKill two birds with one stone there, nice for a meal and great looking for birds and so on.
ReplyDeleteA tranquil lovely setting.
Good luck to Bruce and hope he can continue to do well.
If I lived in your neck of the woods then I would love to join you both at such a delightful venue - lovely area, wonderful selection of wildlife, sounds like delicious food, and welcoming hosts too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a marvelous place to visit, it sounds idyllic :)
ReplyDeleteNice post David.
ReplyDeleteHi David.
ReplyDeleteHow nice there to escape the hectick of the day.
Nice to hear that the new owner has passed through and it is still going well.
Greetings from Patricia.
From your eloquent description, David, River Song sounds like an 'island paradise' - a refuge in a tempestuous sea. I just wish we had a 'River Song' within reach of us here, and a populace that understood the meaning of social-distancing - we'd be regular and frequent visitors!
ReplyDeleteWe would have Bruce stock up on the ice cream before your arrival, Richard!
DeleteRiverSong is a great place. Too bad for me it was not available.
ReplyDeleteDavid, as always, a great relationship and very beautiful pictures.
Hugs and greetings.
Can't wait to rediscover the many wonders of River Song on Thursday. And with little imagination, lunch on the enchanting patio will have me dining in Europe somewhere!!
ReplyDeleteHurricane Hanna. ...I think it's over. Power went out yesterday about 1 pm...didn't get any A.C. until it was restored about 9 this morning. High winds, sporadic heavy rain, and last night tornadoes all over the area. No damage for us except lots of small branches.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and linking up this weekend. Bud & I have a bit of clean-up to do, so my visit is short.
So lovely. I like the bird spotting list!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice place to enjoy some good food and take a walk enjoying nature.
ReplyDeleteUn fuerte abrazo querido amigo y compadre David.
Buen lugar para hacer fotos. Se ve un espacio muy agradable, en el que no sólo las aves toman protagonismo, también las plantas y el establecimiento nos proporcionan buenas vistas para contemplar.
ReplyDeleteFeliz domingo.
Every detail needed to create a perfect visit has been addressed, right down to the binoculars for those who might not have them. The menu looks just right, and the chance to see so many birds and other creatures is delightful. The flora sound as charming as the fauna -- if I ever get to this part of the world, I surely would put this spot at the top of my list for a visit.
ReplyDeleteBefore you arrive, Linda, I will have them repair the holes in the red carpet and have it laid out for your visit!
DeleteHello David,
ReplyDeletejust seeing the first picture shows that it is a paradise sanctuary :-))))) What a nice house and what a beautiful picture! Great that you are received so kindly.
The pictures of the ospreys are really so beautiful and so beautiful up close! Just beautiful!
It would be terrible if they closed their business now, but I read that they are now preparing delicious food for the visitors :-)))) The space used for cubists is also a beautiful item and a beautiful one. addition.
it is a location with multiple possibilities.
I enjoyed your beautiful report and your photos.
A sweet greeting from the Netherlands xx
Helma
PS we went to a quiet area last week. Take a break from all hecktiek.
Very nice publication, it is a beautiful place in the middle of nature, to enjoy a tasty meal and enjoy nature. I was carefully looking at the photos, I always enjoy seeing the Ospreys, my dream is to see one of them, here in my country they are difficult to see, only in certain sectors that are not my area of residence.
ReplyDeleteThe species of birds are not too many if I compare with those of my city but the mammals are more abundant and at the same time more charismatic, I would very much like to be able to see them
Looking at the posters, I was struck to see that one is written in addition to Spanish and Arabic, it is not in French one of the official languages of Canada. I looked at the prices of the menu as a curiosity I can see the differences that exist in the economies of the countries, those prices although for you they are accessible, in my country if someone charged that for a menu it would go bankrupt, unless it was located in a neighborhood of wealthy people and also had a lot of fame.
Regards
Hi Hernán: It is true that French is one of the official languages of Canada, but a lot of migration in this area is from the troubled regions of the Middle East and from Latin America, so perhaps the sign reflects that reality.
DeleteOne day I hope. Maybe in time for the next breeding season for the Ospreys.
ReplyDeleteLet me know when.
DeleteA strawberry and vanilla ice cream for me, please!
ReplyDeleteGood night, dear friend! Hello, how are you!
How beautiful and peaceful place, i also love its name: RiverSong, translated i interpret it as it la cancion del rio or maybe el rio que canta o el murmullo del rio... something like that; even the sign that says they don't discriminate against anyone, that's very good, very cool. You are enjoying the summer holidays, in these parts, instead we are on winter holidays. Great both.
Enjoy a delicious ice cream and i drink hot chocolate. A big hug and good start to the week ahead!
Seria un paseo precioso, me encantaría ir tal vez algún día. Un abrazo amigo David y feliz semana.
ReplyDeleteHi David wow what a beautiful place to visit. So much to see and the food sounds amazing,Thankyou for sharing this place with us .
ReplyDeleteI can see that following your blog is going to leave me with desires that I cannot fulfil! I shall just have to enjoy it all vicariously.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a wonderful place to chill out and enjoy delicious food. And also seeing ospreys!!!
ReplyDeleteGreetings, Jonny.
That stone cottage is so charming. Love the patio area of the restaurant, looks very inviting, hope they are successful. I agree with you David, it's time to support local businesses, specially the small ones.
ReplyDeleteUne sortie sympa, ça avait l'air bon au restaurant!
ReplyDeleteJ'ai de retour une queue rousse qui couve, à suivre...
Bonne soirée
Hi David, the Osprey family is so beautiful. You are lucky.
ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a place that surely is worth visiting.
Greetings, Kees
nice place :)
ReplyDeleteHi David - really enticing ... I'd love to visit and spend a week or two in and around River Song, and then Chef Duff ... looks just beautiful and as though it'll keep going especially with local support. The food looks good too ... not quite lunch time here! Take care - Hilary
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous looking place ... I wouldn't mind a visit :)
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
If we're ever allowed back in Canada again, that's something I would love to do. I bet Rick would, too, and we'd love both the tour and the dining with Chef Duff! It looks like the perfect combination of divine food and fabulous birds and wildlife, though I'd prefer to pass on the snakes!
ReplyDeleteMiriam and I will be your guide and constant companions, Jeanie and Rick.
Deletehello David
ReplyDeleteThat's how it should be, you help each other and you make us this gastronomy and the beauty outside tasty
well several thousand miles separate us from vanilla ice cream
I would have booked a tour with you .. ;-))
great report
Regards Frank
What a great place to be able to visit and roam around at.
ReplyDeleteIt looks good. Nice place to be!
ReplyDeletethe photos of the Ospreys are stunning!
Love the header!
