Until recently I had but a series of cheap shelves, totally inadequate to the weight they were asked to hold, and every so often I would go down to my office first thing in the morning to find that shelves had collapsed and books were all over the floor. Needless to say, this grieved me greatly.
At some point, during our recent trip to Slovenia and Croatia, I was bemoaning this fact to Jim Huffman, who is masterful woodworker by any standards, and he said, "You should have told me earlier, I would have built you something." And so started a venture to custom build bookshelves for me, anchored right into the frame of the house, designed to hold a tank and capable of withstanding earthquakes!
Here is Jim, artisan par excellence, standing in front of the first section he installed.
Not only did he construct bookshelves designed to hold my books in the most effective fashion, he used every inch of space available and made them floor to ceiling, and in the process fashioned items of rare quality and beauty. To say that I am delighted with the result would be the understatement of the year.
It gave me the opportunity to reorganize everything, all is on the shelves in accordance with current taxonomy, and other books are organized in the fashion that suits the way my mind works so that everything is always at hand.
As you will see below, by maximizing the space available, I have much empty space that I did not have before.
No doubt this will motivate all of you to rush out and acquire books to send to me so that I can use my empty space to great advantage!
There are other books in my office, and other aspects too, so the following pictures give you an idea of where I spend part of every day.
I hope you have enjoyed seeing this glimpse into the life of a fellow blogger.
Please send Jim over here I really could do with some shelving myself. A great glimpse David at all those wonderful books. You asked about the daylight hours on the Isle of Lewis. The darkest point there is usually about 7 hours 20 mins in June this leads to 17 hours 30 mins, hope that helps.
ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteYou have a big collection of books about birds. I have a lot books about gardening and flowers, but not so many as you. Your shelfs look wonderful.
Hari OM
ReplyDeleteOkay. Now I got shelf envy... YAM xx
Has he read them, wow, beautiful collection.
ReplyDeleteHello David!
ReplyDeleteI really like your new library and shelves !
I also admire your book collection of birds and nature!
Very beautiful decorations with birds and paintings!
Have a lovely weekend!
Dimi...
Estimado amigo es un lujo poder disfrutar de tan maravillosos libros, enhorabuena. Un fuerte abrazo.
ReplyDeleteWow a great collection and I love the ornaments as well. I could do with Jim here but we do not really have the space to build such a big book case but it would be very nice :-) Thanks for sharing Diane
ReplyDeleteA wonderful colletion of books, paintings and woodcarved birds. I can understand you are happy with the new bookcases David it looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Roos
Wonderful! My book collection is wee small in comparison...but similar in subject
ReplyDeletematter. The shelving is superb.
Wow! That's quite a library! Nothing like some good bookshelves to keep things organized and looking good.
ReplyDeleteI'm not only highly impressed by Jim's excellent work and your marvellous collection of books, David, but by the tidiness of your office. Mine is an absolute tip in comparison - with shelves crafted by Ikea!
ReplyDeleteScotland was extremely windy, but I did get many (very) close views of Crested Tit.
With love to you both - - - Richard
Did you cover your traditional areas or did you venture farther afield?
DeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteKnowing that you have got such a great library I know who is the right person to ask any questions about names and behaviour of birds.
Greetings, Kees
Wow. Impressive!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteHello, your library is amazing. I like the pretty carvings and bird statues. Happy Sunday, enjoy your day and new week!
ReplyDeleteHello David!:) Wow!!:) No wonder you know so much about birds! You have an amazing collection of bird and nature books, and thanks to the splendid skill of your friend, they sit well on your new shelves. My paltry collection of bird and nature books occupy about two meters of space on our shelves. I like your carved wooden birds, ...I remember your post about them!:)
ReplyDeleteAnd this is not even the good stuff, Sonja. That is all in the living room and family room. The stuff in my office is more in the nature of folk art - but very agreeable nonetheless.
DeleteWow,I could spend a life time in that room, and still not read all your wonderful books.
ReplyDeleteAmazing transformation.
John.
Well, when you come to Ontario you can make a start, John!
DeleteHi Both,
ReplyDeleteVery impressive book shelves and books stored within them.
Well done to Jim in the making and to you for collecting so many books.
We can understand where all the knowledge is collected from.
All the best, John
What good fortune to have a friend skilled in woodwork. The shelves are beautiful. I really like your bird carvings. You have a fine collection of them surrounding you while you work as well.
ReplyDeleteWhat sturdy looking shelves and I'm sure you will soon fill the remaining spaces.
ReplyDeleteYou sure do have quite a collection there - well worth storing well. The Birds of Venezuela book caught my eye. I lived there for five years and there sure was a lot of beauty to be found.
ReplyDeleteNot a place you’d want to be living in now.
DeleteSadly so. I used to go back yearly to visit but stopped doing so about 10 years ago as I just felt it was too dangerous.
DeleteI think your library has all the books about birds from all over! I like the birds decorations.
ReplyDeleteHello David, and thank you for your lovely comment on my blog!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great library you have. Looking forward to follow your travels with birds,
Happy if you want to follow my blog too😊
Ida
ReplyDeleteSoooo, you have many books David.
How nice that they can all be well in the closet now.
Greetings Tinie
Now I know what you do during those short winter days. By the way, how is Jim in bulding heligolands or squirrel-poof bird feeders? We could use his expertise over here.
ReplyDeleteSquirrel-proof feeder? For that you you need the intelligence of Einstein, the deviousness of Trump and the wisdom of Solomon all combined - and it’s still not enough! Such a thing has not yet been, nor ever will be, invented!
DeleteI'm envious that you have such beautiful bookcases and custom built ones at that! You have a lot of books and given your work I'm sure they are more than useful. As for me I've decided to start downsizing my personal library. I simply have more things that I need into the future. Even though I haven't been buying new books for awhile now I still haven't been able to start really culling the ones I own. Have a wonderful week David. I'm sure the days will be more enjoyable now that your books are securely stored.
ReplyDeleteI can understand what a wrench it is to part with books. In addition to what you see in the blog we have many, many more - novels, biographies, other works of non-fiction, cook books - Miriam has an entire collection of quilting books - and so on. If ever we move it will cost a fortune just to ship them
DeleteWhat an amazing collection of books ! Wow!!! Just back from a tiger national park and the place we stayed at had a good library of books on wildlife and varied wildlife artefacts. However, this beats their collection in all aspects !
ReplyDeleteThank you, Radha. I enjoy my library very much and use it every day. I much prefer books over the internet, especially in the good weather months when one can relax outside, book in hand, drink at the ready!
DeleteThat is one amazing collection of books and the shelves are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow, so many books! I love to read, but I don't have many books anymore. I use library and here in Finland we have book a exchange place in many places, like cafes and restaurants. I also have one in my working place.
ReplyDeleteI think Jim is a very nice man :)
Hi Tarja: All of what you say is available here in Canada, but I am working on ornithological matters of one kind or another almost every day ad I use my own library extensively.
DeleteFloor-to-ceiling is the way to go - and shelves of well-loved books is a great thing to behold !
ReplyDeleteYup. Shelf envy, lol.
ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty benign envy!
DeleteVery nice - I think I saw at least 6 that will make you feel at home when you come for a BBQ!
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful and complete library you have about nature and especially birds. I also have a room where I keep my books and I have my PC and cameras, although I have almost 1000 books I do not have so many of birds, here they have not been published too many auque anyway I still need to get much more from the vernacular and foreign bibliography . One day I send you some pictures so you can see the books of this region.
This man is a living encyclopedia :)
ReplyDeleteI am learning about birds' world and bird photography.
ReplyDeleteAnd I was impressed by this incredible collection of books.
It's a true passion which you can only envy.
I am glad that I found your blog. It's a lot to learn and to remember.
Greetings from Utah.
