Northern Carmine Bee-eater

Northern Carmine Bee-eater Merops nubicus
Awash Falls National Park, Ethiopia
23 January 2014

Surely one of the most beautiful birds in all the world, I found Carmine Bee-eater to be one of the most memorable species I have ever seen. Gregarious and confiding, they seemed not to be at all affected by our presence and we were thrilled at the large numbers we saw. I think I would have been quite happy to have simply watched them all day!

  5. Here was me logging in to see pictures from Long Point and I have to study 8 Carmine Bee Eaters in a single tree. It's a hard life indeed for both of us - we have sun and no wind this morning so off to the zoo with 2 lively granddaughters. Wish me well.

So good to hear you got to LP. Hope you said hello to Jon McCracken for me?

  8. You did well to spot this highly camouflaged bird, David!! On reflection, and being serious for a minute,my brother would possibly have missed this bird because he's red-green colourblind!

What a stunner though, and I really love the first two images - the first as being a magnificent portrait, and the second as it shows the gregarious nature of the bird in its environment. PS. - Tell Phill he can't count!
